2010 Worcester Region Summer Institute

Discover the interconnections among the science disciplines as you investigate a variety of both natural and man-made terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and landscapes, Hone your observational skills by learning to “read” the natural and built landscape. Discover how human impacts and natural features influence river and stream ecology. How do land uses, water quality, invasive species, topography and soils change aquatic ecosystems? Examine the effects of weather and climate on forest plants and wildlife.Explore the effects of climate change and invasive species on both urban landscapes and natural ecosystems. Experience how humans shaping the natural landscape of New England can be reflected through visual arts. Use a garden ecosystem to convey ecological principles such as nutrient cycling and the interactions between living and non-living elements of the environment. The processes of collecting and analyzing data provide a basis for drawing conclusions and posing questions for further inquiry. Learn to design studies that develop students’ curiosity to explore and explain everyday phenomena through meaningful data.
