Museum Institute for Teaching Science

2010 Berkshire Region Summer Institute

Investigate life cycles of plants and animals, the water cycle, the rock cycle, and other Earth processes as you experience a variety of exciting inquiry-based lessons that explore how cycles, processes and systems connect life, physical and earth science.  Dig into the science of soil, and trace the paths of matter and energy in a forest ecosystem. Sample the Housatonic River for the presence of zebra mussels, and investigate their impact on native species’ life cycles.  Examine ancient Egyptian mummies, inside and out.  Mummification experiments and forensic science investigations will link our life cycle to those of insects.  Find new and exciting ways to observe the rock cycle with a guided tour of Natural Bridge State Park.  Bring hydroelectricity from the river to your classroom.  Learn about water and energy cycles at local dams; then build your own water wheels.  Explore safe ways to use fire and smoke to explain states of matter, heat transfer and physical and chemical changes.  Experience hands-on, minds-on activities that will reinvigorate your students’ interest in exploring the world of science!  Learn about the diversity of resources available in the Berkshire region to enhance your classroom teaching.
